Did you know that one person can make a difference? YOU CAN. You really can.
Our world changed on November 12, 2010 when our grandson was diagnosed with Leukemia (T-cell ALL to be more exact). He was blessed by many nameless donors. Some of you may have helped by donating blood at a local hospital or collection center. He received bone marrow from an anonymous donor after the transplant from his sister didn't bring about remission. But we lost him in January. He was 7 years old.
While hospitalized he realized that other kids didn't have many of the blessings he had and suggested that we collect bananas and send them to the kids who didn't have enough food. His parents suggested that bananas might not make the trip very well. He began to focus on water – clean water. Friends (and people from all over the world) have donated to Liam's Wells and there are already 3 wells producing clean waters for kids in Kenya (2 schools and 1 hospital).
Like I said earlier, you don't have to do it by yourself. See what can happen when one person does the right thing: Liam's Wells (the Water Project).
As mentioned earlier, we were blessed by many. Here are some I'd like to acknowledge:
St. Jude's Research Hospital
The Ronald McDonald House (in Memphis, TN and Ft Worth, TX)
Cook Children's Hospital (Ft Worth, TX) where we learned to love Dr. Kelly Vallance.
Caring Bridge. Do you know about Caring Bridge? It is a wonderful tool that allows folks to walk alongside friends during times of illness.
Pure Photography. Early in Liam's illness, Debbie Riggs drove to Ft. Worth from Abilene and took family portraits. She then very generously provided sets of those pictures for us. As you can imagine, we are very grateful for those healthy looking images.
Blood donors (most of whom have no idea of the difference their gifts make)
The Family of Cherie Hopkins. There are Cherie stories listed on u-lo-g.com but the story here is that when Cherie died suddenly, her family requested that folks donate toward Liam's medical expenses instead of flowers for the funeral. They knew that God has many ways of providing for our needs and this blessing was definitely a balm from Gilead. I don't know how long this link will be available but here it is: Cherie on Facebook.
This agency is no longer providing the residential service we received. <Habitat for Hope. The Horrocks family opened their home to us and provided a lovely respite during our time at St Jude's Hospital.>
For a number of year's I've hosted a site designed to help folks dealing with grief. Now, I'm going back and connecting with those truths.
