Apparently there aren't any records from the old seaport at Indianola. But there are numerous records from Galveston. The earliest information on immigration on the site dates back to 1844. Since Texas joined the United States in 1845, these records hark back to when Texas was an independent nation.
The names I encountered were familiar. They aren't my family lines but here's a short list of immigrant families: Dornak, Drozd, Franke, Hajovsky, Hoffman, Janak, Jalufka, Krenek, Kocian, Kulcak, Matzke, Mikeska, Novak, Pavelka, Polasheck, Stavinoha and Veselka It looked like the index to my high school annual.
I did feel a bit sorry for the family named "Schmuck." That led to a search of Whitepages.com. The listings for several Schmuck families in recent Texas phone books would indicate that family roots are stronger than a few tired old jokes.
