A few years ago the Grace Museum featured an exhibit of hats and pictures of women wearing hats – mostly to worship assemblies. Jan Karon, author of the Mitford series of novels wrote a book called Miss Fannie's Hat. It's a cute book. I'd think it should have been Mrs. Fannie's hat since the sweet lady has a daughter. But then in the South it was custom to speak of the older ladies as Miss " first name. " Brings up images of shady trees and large verandas doesn't it?
For Miss Fannie and the ladies in the Grace exhibit, hats were worn to church. They were worn on other occasions as well but certainly to church. Head coverings have generated interesting rules. I'm not sure what the rules are now, but for a long time female visitors to Roman Catholic chapels were expected to have some sort of head covering. A kleenex was usually acceptable. But there needed to be some attempt to cover the head.
