Bluebonnets

In Abilene we love our bluebonnets. One of the best places I've seen for bluebonnets is the Buffalo Gap cemetery. We paid a visit to the cemetery on Sunday to check out the prospects. It is still a bit early for the biggest displays in this area. It looks like there will be more flowers this year than last year but not as many as a few years ago. The picture at the top of this page was taken in 2012.

I was raised on the Texas coast and attended college here in Abilene. Each year at Spring Break it was always obvious that Spring starts on the coast and works its way inland. An early Spring Break meant fewer flowers but the amount of green visible in South Texas was always much greater. Usually the dividing line was somewhere near Austin:  GREEN below the line and blah brown to the north. So if you have to see bluebonnets right now (in person not pictures on the internet) hop in the car and head south. Usually the hill country is prime bluebonnet country. There are often very nice displays along Interstate highway 37.

I'd love to hear from you if you have a favorite place for bluebonnets or other wildflower displays. Email me.

I am also "the favorite uncle Gary"
    because
I always told the nieces and nephews that I was. Worked great until one of them realized I was their only uncle Gary.
