Texas Seaport Museum & genealogy

I've already been visiting the Texas Seaport Museum's website and especially the passenger lists they've posted online. I learned about this site at the recent Chautauqua lecture at Buffalo Gap Historical Village. Jeff Wright (a McMurry grad) made several suggestions during his presentation that I'll be using.
Apparently there aren't any records from the old seaport at Indianola. But there are numerous records from Galveston. The earliest information on immigration on the site dates back to 1844. Since Texas joined the United States in 1845, these records hark back to when Texas was an independent nation.
The names I encountered were familiar. They aren't my family lines but here's a short list of immigrant families: Dornak, Drozd, Franke, Hajovsky, Hoffman, Janak, Jalufka, Krenek, Kocian, Kulcak, Matzke, Mikeska, Novak, Pavelka, Polasheck, Stavinoha
and Veselka  It looked like the index to my high school annual.
I did feel a bit sorry for the family named "Schmuck." That led to a search of Whitepages.com. The listings for several Schmuck families in recent Texas phone books would indicate that family roots are stronger than a few tired old jokes.

What's the difference between AISD's successful bond election and Jim Ned's attempt?
In the same election cycle, voters in Blanket and Trent rejected smaller school bond proposals. Voters in Ira and Merkel approved bonds for school buildings in excess of $10 million. Remember that it wasn't all that long ago that a bond issue failed in AISD (2008). So it isn't just a matter of community size or the cost of the proposals.
I'd say the main difference with Jim Ned was the fear of losing campuses in communities. I suppose if you are already bussing kids to Tuscola for the higher grades it doesn't seem such a stretch to extend that to all grades. But closing a community's school is HUGE. This change would have closed buildings in both Lawn and Buffalo Gap.
Would it make sense to replace two old buildings with a facility that would be safer and much cheaper to operate? Yes, that's a no-brainer. But when it means closing a building (or two) that have sheltered generations of students -- that's different. And then to move that group of kids out of town and down the road several miles, that's WAY different.
Add to that the possibility of higher taxes in a community where the masthead of the local paper proclaims it is "Proudly serving Buffalo Gap, TX and the Conservative (Once Silent) Majority of America." I just can't figure why anyone thought such a proposal had any chance of winning.

The approach I saw from AISD was nice. Those dog and pony shows help. But it takes much more than the right approach when you're dealing with the connection between a community and her school buildings. The bond failures in Blanket, Trent and Jim Ned remind us that we're in a climate of austerity. Any taxing entity needs to understand that and build their appeals appropriately.

Just heard about a free genealogy training session scheduled at the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. Follow this link for the information.

You can't hardly beat "Free." I've got a small plot of land out near Buffalo Gap and am developing an interest in genealogy so this makes for a great event for me. Maybe I'll see you in Buffalo Gap at 11 am on Saturday, November 9th. Did I mention that it is free?

The Abilene Public Library has some great resources for genealogy if you'd rather not traipse all the way out to the Gap.

I am also "the favorite uncle Gary"
    because
I always told the nieces and nephews that I was. Worked great until one of them realized I was their only uncle Gary.
