Benevolence

At least two ancient documents emphasize the good will and kindness of the earliest Christians. From a pagan perspective Lucian of Samosata writes a satirical story called "The Death (or Passing) of Peregrinus. According to Lucian, the benevolence of Christians is a result of their foolishness rather than their kindness.

  • ”The poor fools have persuaded themselves above all that they are immortal and will live forever, from which it follows that they despise death and many of them willingly undergo imprisonment. Moreover, their first lawgiver taught them that they are all brothers of one another, when once they have sinned by denying the Greek gods, and by worshiping that crucified sophist himself and living according to his laws. So, they despise all things equally and regard them as common property, accepting such teaching without any sort of clear proof. Accordingly, if any quack or trickster, who can press his advantage, comes among them he can acquire great wealth in a very short time by imposing on simple-minded people.” (from Wikipedia).

In contrast, an early Christian document known as the Didache (The Teaching of the Twelve), includes instructions to churches regarding traveling teachers who would mooch off churches. Traveling prophets are to be housed for one night or two under extenuating circumstances. But a prophet who remains for three days or asks for money is a false prophet. (Didache chapter 11).

CSC = the Christian Service Center

Back in 1965, a local congregation opened the Christian Service Center. In Abilene a number of religious groups provide benevolence so the CSC may not be unique. But it's the one I know about so please let it represent the groups you know about. In fact, go ahead and leave a comment with the info about other centers in the area.

For close to 50 years now, the Christian Service Center in Abilene has been providing blue jeans and underwear for kids. Sure they provide other things but I think about blue jeans when I think of the CSC. And I think of my dad. My dad grew up during the Depression on an East Texas farm with a number of brothers and sisters. He's approaching 90 now but still has a very warm place in his memory for the uncle who bought him a pair of shoes so he didn't have to walk to school barefoot. Clothing for school age kids makes an impact. The Christian Service Center is good4Abilene.

Benevolence is tough. I spent almost 30 years as a congregation's representative meeting with folks in need. Gut level -- it tore me up. I didn't feel right if I didn't help but for some "askers" I sure didn't feel right if I did.

There's been plenty of rhetoric raised by the recent election. Let's talk a bit about "givers" and "takers." Isn't it strange that all the folks talking about this are "givers"? I wonder what the "takers" are saying. More than that, I wonder who would be willing to be labeled as a "taker."

Everybody who's dabbled in this area has stories. Some of them are encouraging. Let me go ahead and admit that I'm likely to come across as selfish and cold hearted in this discussion. The first stories that come to my mind are the negative ones that reinforce stereotypes. But I also remember the encouraging ones like the time I went out to the mailbox and found $3 and a note. According to the note the money was from someone who'd received gasoline from the church. He wanted to provide some return on that investment.

Artwalk

The Center for Contemporary Arts coordinates a special event on the 2nd Thursday of every month called Artwalk. Artwalk is free and fun. Some of the local businesses even extend their hours to cater to foot traffic.

The focus changes each month. I've seen some really nice cars on display. I think we even had a visit from a Martian ambassador one month.

During the summer months it can be uncomfortably warm. But at this time of year it should be really nice. Have you walked through "downtown" Abilene lately? I love Minter Park. It is so refreshing to be able to just sit -- watching and listening to the water run down that shady wall.

They are expecting a gypsy invasion at tonight's Artwalk. The Paramount theater will be showing a documentary. Minter Park will be the scene for belly dancing. Coloring opportunities will be available for the kids. There are always some vendors perched on the sidewalks. And Monks will be handy for a shot of caffeine. Say, do you have your "Keep Abilene Boring" T-shirt?

Politics

"If we're facing a controversial topic and I've got about the same number of people on each side mad at me – I figure I'm in the right place." That comment came from a fellow who'd been the mayor of a large South Texas city.

Since it's election day, let's digress from the good things in Abilene to consider politics. Politics isn't really a dirty word. It's received a negative connotation (as in "office politics" or "church politics") but the concept is bound up in being human. Humans congregate. And with community comes the need to cooperate. Politics is an element of cooperation.

The absence of community cooperation opens the door for someone to grab control by force. Sometimes the force is blatant. At other times force is exerted through the threat of disfavor or unpopularity. And sometimes bribes or other offers impact the decision making process.

The Greek city states birthed the concept of Democracy but it was different from our style. In Athens or Sparta each citizen had a vote. Issues were decided by citizens. But not all people - not even all free people - were citizens. Interestingly, the Greeks understood that priviledge brings responsibility. When it came time to outfit an army, a poor citizen might be expected to outfit a single soldier while a wealthy citizen would be expected to provide an entire ship. This inequality in responsibility bought a greater say in government.

Today, we vote for representatives and then those representatives make the decisions on our laws. They are supposed to represent us. So, I'd like to ask:  Is the best representative the one who votes for what we want or the one who votes for what's right?

United Way

I'm glad that Abilene provides emotional and physical support. I suppose that some of this is done through government agencies but the bulk is done by volunteers who care about others. At this time of year (and after a huge weather emergency) we can't help but acknowledge these hurts and needs. They seem to mushroom in size and number as our awareness grows.

How does a community address so many hurts and actually assist needy people?
Well, the money comes from other people--people who recognize the needs.

But how does that money get distributed to the right places?
That's the struggle. The best answer to date is the United Way. Gifts to the United Way flow to assist numerous agencies. And the flow is directed by volunteers--fellow citizens who've given their own time and energy to study local needs and agencies. These volunteers have listened to and visited the agencies which address the needs of our community. They've wrestled with the difficult questions of how to allocate limited funds.

I'm thankful for these people who make our community a better place to live. You might say they're good4Abilene.

I am also "the favorite uncle Gary"
    because
I always told the nieces and nephews that I was. Worked great until one of them realized I was their only uncle Gary.
