Bluebonnets

In Abilene we love our bluebonnets. One of the best places I've seen for bluebonnets is the Buffalo Gap cemetery. We paid a visit to the cemetery on Sunday to check out the prospects. It is still a bit early for the biggest displays in this area. It looks like there will be more flowers this year than last year but not as many as a few years ago. The picture at the top of this page was taken in 2012.

I was raised on the Texas coast and attended college here in Abilene. Each year at Spring Break it was always obvious that Spring starts on the coast and works its way inland. An early Spring Break meant fewer flowers but the amount of green visible in South Texas was always much greater. Usually the dividing line was somewhere near Austin:  GREEN below the line and blah brown to the north. So if you have to see bluebonnets right now (in person not pictures on the internet) hop in the car and head south. Usually the hill country is prime bluebonnet country. There are often very nice displays along Interstate highway 37.

I'd love to hear from you if you have a favorite place for bluebonnets or other wildflower displays. Email me.

Easter bonnets

Not much call for Easter bonnets in Abilene. At least not in the areas I frequent. With our windy weather it's hard to keep a hat from blowing away. I can remember my sisters wearing Easter bonnets on occasion but that's been a number of years ago. I remember some little hats my mom wore. Mostly I remember my grandmothers' bonnets. Those bonnets were work apparel. Even before all the hoopla about sunscreen wise working women were wearing bonnets. I guess the fancy ladies got to wear hats. Or maybe they just sported parasols.

A few years ago the Grace Museum featured an exhibit of hats and pictures of women wearing hats – mostly to worship assemblies. Jan Karon, author of the Mitford series of novels wrote a book called Miss Fannie's Hat. It's a cute book. I'd think it should have been Mrs. Fannie's hat since the sweet lady has a daughter. But then in the South it was custom to speak of the older ladies as Miss "first name." Brings up images of shady trees and large verandas doesn't it?

For Miss Fannie and the ladies in the Grace exhibit, hats were worn to church. They were worn on other occasions as well  but certainly to church. Head coverings have generated interesting rules. I'm not sure what the rules are now, but for a long time female visitors to Roman Catholic chapels were expected to have some sort of head covering. A kleenex was usually acceptable. But there needed to be some attempt to cover the head.

I am also "the favorite uncle Gary"
    because
I always told the nieces and nephews that I was. Worked great until one of them realized I was their only uncle Gary.
