Reactions to Bar Church

"Why do you publish letters containing obvious factual errors?" was the question for the editor of a small town newspaper. "Our family decided years ago that if a person wanted to look stupid in public – we would let them." That's a great summary of most online letters.

As you might have guessed, controversy over Bar Church has generated a number of online letters to the local newspaper site. I read the first 92 comments and don't care to join that ring.

I would like to praise the elders at Southern Hills (Bar Church's sponsor) for something that doesn't belong in the paper. As I understand it, Bar Church is the dream of a Southern Hills member.

Ken Jones is a leader in the worship services at Southern Hills. Because of his life experiences he is sensitive to the feelings of people who've been told "You're going to Hell." He knows Jesus' parable about the workers in the vineyard (Mat. 20:1-16). He knows that there is hope for all people and Bar Church is part of his plan for sharing that hope.

Bar Church is different. It is controversial. The Southern Hills elders had to know this would bring criticism. So I'm very proud that they're standing shoulder to shoulder with Ken in reaching out with Good News. I'm also very impressed with the goals:

One year from now, we will consider Bar Church a success if...
     1.  People who were far away from him are coming to Jesus.
     2.  We have regular attendees who invite their friends, who in turn, invite their friends, and so on.
     3.  We have people who began as members of the Bar Church “audience” who turn into Bar Church leaders.  In other words, disciples of Jesus are being made who in turn are making other disciples.

Southern Hills has a history of assisting groups in Abilene who are trying to reach specific communities. When we moved to Abilene we attended New Life church–another group that received support from Southern Hills. New Life was another situation where Southern Hills supported a member by providing a foundation under a dream. Bar Church, then, is the latest in a series of efforts to reach people where they are.

Frontier Texas

Do you have any local items on your bucket list? Frontier Texas is on ours.

Actually I made it inside the building once. I took the grandson for a visit. He was a preschooler and had no interest in anything even remotely scary so we skipped the exhibits and just enjoyed the books and sculptures in the entryway.

Returning from an out of town wedding over the weekend we drove past the new buffalo with their lighted silhouettes. That's when we started a list for our "Staycation."  Frontier Texas will be at the top because we've never been there. Here's a coupon if you'd like to save a little money. We've been to the NCCIL the Grace, the Paramount, and the Center for Contemporary Arts more than once.  And the Zoo was a regular attraction when the grandbabies were smaller. We might even plan an outing to Abilene State Park (but we've been there too}.

What local venues would you suggest visiting for a Staycation? The 12th Armored Museum? Play Faire Park? Why not leave a suggestion in a comment? Or to build your own list, jump on over to the Visitor's bureau. Maybe your kids would enjoy their Coloring book.

If you're looking for a short tour during bluebonnet season, I'd suggest a trip to the Cemetery at Buffalo Gap. It's an amazing sight.

Bar Church . . . say what?

Our congregation will soon initiate a new assembly we're calling "Bar Church." The plan is to actually have Christians worship in a bar. We're taking this step because Christians haven't always done well at being Salt and Light.

This is worth a try. Jesus went to the people. So in Bar Church we'll be following the footsteps of the Master. This won't be the first church group using a saloon as a gathering place. But it will definitely be an exception to the expected environment.

Can it be that moving to a bar will allow us to actually achieve what the theme song of "Cheers" described as "a place where everyone knows your name"?

Years ago a friend told me about the precision of the instruments in his refinery. He said that they could operate within 1 percent of blowing up.

I usually try to stay as far as I can get from an explosion. But an oil refinery is much more lucrative when the pressure and temperature approach the point where the whole thing could blow up. I think believers should take this to heart. Leaven has to surround itself with dough in order to do its job.

I am also "the favorite uncle Gary"
    because
I always told the nieces and nephews that I was. Worked great until one of them realized I was their only uncle Gary.
