Bargains at West Texas Rehab Auction

One of the good things about Abilene is the West Texas Rehab (okay, so it's in other places too). And some of the big events in Abilene are held to support the Rehab center. This weekend's Auction is one such event.

For those looking for bargains at the Auction I've done a bit of calculating in the food category. I'm not quite sure why some of our grocery stores aren't donors but the options for good meals are abundant. As of Friday morning (1/17 at 10 am) the best bargains (Computed at (Value minus bid) divided by Value) are:

Towne Crier Shrimp Peel #352  --Half Price! **
Copper Creek Catering #362  --Half Price! **
Hickory Street/Victorian Attic #372
Don Enrique's #368
Desserts in San Angelo (Halfman's cakes) #353
Tenderloin package in San Angelo (Zentner's) #358
Golden Corral  #364

A couple of offers have already received bids equal to or greater than the value listed:
Perini's Steakhouse
Skeet's Texas Grill

There are other bargains but these were the easiest to quantify and the most accessible in price.

I'm grateful

I'm grateful for the many Abilenians who  have helped carry our grief. Some lifted us before the Father's throne in prayer. Many shed tears and shared in our loss. We've heard from people around the world who were touched by Liam's life. We've been humbled by those who've contributed financially to turn Liam's dreams of clean water into refreshing realities. Thank you, we appreciate your kindness.

We celebrated Liam's birthday this week by eating Whataburgers. One of his young friends suggested that and we all felt it was appropriate. During Liam's stay in Fort Worth (and transplant at Cook's Hospital) a friend (a former Whataburger employee) read and passed along a Caring Bridge post about his appetite for their burgers. The corporate office sent a box of goodies including coupons. And that's when we learned that Liam's maternal grandfather had worked at Whataburger many years ago.

Many of the kindnesses we've received have involved food. One family made sure that we had a home cooked Thanksgiving meal in 2010. For an extended period after Liam returned to Abilene from St Jude's Hospital, a host of folks brought meals to the house. How do you truly thank folks for that kind of blessing?

Today marks the 1st anniversary of Liam's "graduation." It's a day that we've been dreading. But I'm hopeful that the anticipation will prove worse than the actual experience.

It was a drive by . . .

In Mrs. Doubtfire Robin Williams describes an event "It was a drive by fruiting." Last night I received a drive by. It was a drive by prayer.

I was in Best Buy using one of their laptops to get some technical data on one of their clearance items. A young fellow stepped up beside me and offered to pray for me. When I accepted his offer he dropped his jacket on the floor, placed his rather large Bible on the jacket and reached out to hold both my hands. He asked that I be blessed financially, mentioned something about a coming revival and then he was gone.

I'm a bit curious about it. I guess he was afraid the store people would usher him out if he was caught praying with customers. Though I can't see that Best Buy would be averse to customers who've been blessed financially. In fact it sounds like they could use a few more customers of whatever financial means.

I guess I should admit that I checked to make sure that my wallet was still in my pocket. Having read about Perigrinus it seemed reasonable.

My wife was over at Books A Million. She said she also had an offer of prayer. Similar modus operandi. So, I'm wondering if this is a new fad. It is certainly much more uplifting than most fads. And I'd be happy to know that such a fad started here in the holy city.

And while I'd love to see a big influx of cash, there are several things that are much more important to me. Maybe these "drive by prayers" could ask what I'd like them to pray for.

I am also "the favorite uncle Gary"
    because
I always told the nieces and nephews that I was. Worked great until one of them realized I was their only uncle Gary.
